Christmas Eve Farolito Walk

Christmas Eve Farolito Walk
One of Santa Fe’s most beloved holiday traditions, the Canyon Road Farolito Walk, lights up the hearts and souls of thousands who stroll the iconic road on Christmas Eve. Known for world class galleries, Canyon Road transforms itself into a work of art during this annual celebration unique to Santa Fe.
Thousands of farolitos cast a glow on the gardens, courtyards and adobe walls of the century-old buildings lining the road. Farolitos are little lights made out of paper bags, sand, and tea candles. In Spanish, the word farolito translates as “little lantern” and it is the preferred term in Santa Fe for the decorations that are referred to as luminarias elsewhere.
Both spirit and senses will be enriched by the aroma of piñon logs burning in small bonfires (luminarias) and the sounds of street musicians playing traditional holiday songs. The sweet taste of hot chocolate, warm biscochitos, and luminarias along the road take the chill out of the crisp mountain air.
Many businesses are closed on Christmas Eve, however, others remain open for last minute shoppers and offer a place to warm up. Be sure to dress warmly, and bring the whole family to this festive holiday event.
Neighbors and visitors stroll Canyon Road, Acequia Madre, and other east-side streets. Many of the streets in the area are closed to vehicular traffic and parking during the Christmas Eve walk.
