Pojoaque

This diverse community north of Santa Fe is made up of a number of areas, including Cuyamungue, Jacona and El Rancho and the neighboring Pueblo of Pojoaque, where ancient traditions and culture continue to flourish today. Devoted to preserving traditional arts of New Mexico's Tewa-speaking pueblos, the Poeh Cultural Center and Museum showcases Pueblo art, exhibits and hosts traditional Indian dances. The Pojoaque Pueblo Tourist Center features northern New Mexico's largest Indian arts and crafts shop and offers an information center. Pojoaque Pueblo is home to New Mexico's largest casino resort, Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder, and the superb Towa Golf Resort, named “Best Golf Resort in North America” by the World Golf Awards.

Pojoaque Pueblo

Pojoaque lies 15 miles north of Santa Fe on US-64. Within Pojoaque is the Pojoaque Pueblo, encompassing both the past and present. Once in the pueblo, visitors can experience  the Poeh Cultural Center and Museum which focuses on cultural preservation and revitalization within the Pueblo communities of the northern Rio Grande Valley, emphasizing  the arts  and cultures of all pueblo people.  You can shop Pueblo pottery, textiles and jewelry as well as souvenir items.

San Ildefonso Pueblo

A 23-mile drive north of Santa Fe will take you to San Ildefonso Pueblo, the most visited northern pueblo in New Mexico and a flourishing art community. San Ildefonso is best known to be the home of the late Maria Martinez who along with her husband, Julian, developed black-on-black pottery. Maria’s work can be seen at the Pueblo museum, located near the church. The pueblo is also known for its natural beauty. Located at the base of the beautiful Black Mesa, the Rio Grande meanders through the pueblo, creating a lush habitat along its banks. San Ildefonso is home to the San Ildefonso Pueblo Museum and the San Ildefonso Fishing Lake and picnic area.

Take I-25 north to the St. Francis exit. St. Francis will become US-84/285. Take US-84/285 to Pojoaque. Take NM-502 west to Los Alamos for 6 miles. Turn right at the entrance to the pueblo.

San Marcos Cafe

Colorful and whimsical, rustic and revered by locals and visitors alike, this locally owned home-style eatery serves breakfast anytime, as well as great burgers, burritos and specials that will keep you coming back. The gloriously gooey cinnamon rolls and biscuits and gravy are favorites, and so is the green chile stew. Heck, everything on the menu is lip-smacking good. Keep an eye out for the peacocks strutting around the property and the movie stars filming nearby who often stop in to dine.

San Miguel Mission

Constructed in 1610 by the Tlaxcalan Indians of Mexico, who came to New Mexico as servants of the Spanish, this is the oldest church still in use in the country. In the anteroom, view a bell cast in Spain in 1356. It was used in churches in Spain and Mexico before being brought to Santa Fe by oxcart in the early 19th century. Priceless ornaments and paintings adorn the interior of the mission.
